Summarizing in literacy

Summarizing focuses on identify the key concepts from a text and recognizing the support for those main ideas and the irrelevant details.  This process allows students to determine what is truly critical to understand versus what is superfluous.  The teacher helps to intervene by pointing out when there are not enough details to support an argument and when too much is being preserved from the original text.

Summarizing in music

When students summarize in music, they are looking for what the most critical parts of the music are, in terms of themes, supporting figures, and counterfigures.  These are critical elements for students to recognize to be able to accurately perform so that they know what to bring out and what plays a supporting role.
