The Comprehensive Musicianship movement came out of several seminars and conferences of the 1960s, including the 1965 Seminar on Comprehensive Musicianship at Northwestern University.  

Student leadership should be the central focus of any secondary level large ensemble.  It provides student ownership in the program, develops independent musicianship, and helps carry the load for the professional staff!
